Preview: Peachtree Audio amp500

Nothing makes a reviewer smile bigger than a quality manufacturer sending a message saying they’d like to send their new top-of-the-line amplifier. That’s what Jim Spainhour of Peachtree greeted me with very recently. The amp500, their new flagship power amplifier arrived within a week and after a 100hrs of burn in, is now playing nice with my main rig.

Initial impressions: black backgrounds, outstanding noise floor, and and plenty of torque and juice at 500wpc into 8 Ohms, to power the notoriously difficult-to-drive Magnepan 1.6qr’s with truly difficult loads. In addition, the amp500 fleshes out the upper registers that have been hidden by my trusty Adcom GFA-555ii.

The class D horsepower has no problem pushing out the bass frequencies. Enough so that I’ve turned off the subwoofer after just half a track from the contemporary jazz ensemble Fourplay. All the while keeping total hold on the 1.6’s.

Let’s just say that in the sub $2k high power amplifier range, the Peachtree amp500 has brought both the beauty and the beast.

Look for the full review in March.
